Programme Summary
Contribute effectively to a structured hazard and operability study of a defined process. Participants interpret design intent, apply guidewords and examine credible causes, consequences and safeguards through process case studies. Facilitated practice develops precise study records and useful recommendations, preparing technically experienced staff for team participation while preserving the separate experience and competence required to lead or approve complex studies.
Training Objectives
1 Explain the purpose and limits of HAZOP; 2 Prepare relevant process information for study participation; 3 Apply guidewords to defined design intent; 4 Evaluate credible causes consequences and safeguards; 5 Record clear findings and actionable study recommendations.
Learning Outcomes
1 Define a node and its design intent; 2 Generate relevant process deviation scenarios; 3 Trace credible causes and resulting consequences; 4 Evaluate stated safeguards without unsupported assumptions; 5 Write a clear HAZOP worksheet and action.
Target Audience
Process Engineers; Operations Engineers; Process Safety Engineers; Maintenance Engineers; Project Engineers.
Target Industries
Oil and Gas Processing; Petrochemical Manufacturing; Chemical Manufacturing; Bulk Fuel Storage; Industrial Gas Production; Power Generation.
Course Contents
- Module 1 HAZOP Purpose and Boundaries: Hazard identification and operability objectives; Lifecycle use and study limitations; Team roles and competent leadership needs.
- Module 2 Study Preparation: Process descriptions drawings and operating information; Scope assumptions and relevant design criteria; Document quality and readiness for review.
- Module 3 Design Intent and Nodes: Selecting coherent study boundaries; Parameters operating states and intended functions; Interfaces and omitted operating modes.
- Module 4 Guideword Application: Meaningful deviations from intended operation; Parameter guideword combinations and relevance; Avoiding mechanical or incomplete brainstorming.
- Module 5 Cause Development: Equipment control utility and human contributors; Credible combinations and dependency concerns; Distinguishing initiating causes from consequences.
- Module 6 Consequence Analysis: Unmitigated outcomes and escalation pathways; People environment assets and operability impacts; Assumptions requiring specialist consequence assessment.
- Module 7 Safeguard Evaluation: Existing prevention and mitigation functions; Independence availability and effectiveness questions; Avoiding credit for undocumented protections.
- Module 8 Recommendations and Actions: Clear issue linked action statements; Responsible owners and closure evidence needs; Separating analysis from premature detailed design.
- Module 9 Study Recording: Traceable causes consequences safeguards and actions; Consistent language and referenced information; Capturing assumptions dissent and unresolved questions.
- Module 10 Special Operating Conditions: Startup shutdown maintenance and abnormal states; Batch and sequence considerations; Interfaces requiring additional study methods.
- Module 11 Study Follow Up: Action review and competent acceptance; Updated documents and implementation verification; Revalidation and change management interfaces.
- Module 12 Team Member Simulation: Participating in a facilitated node review; Writing an individual study worksheet; Defending a recommendation and evidence need.
Assessment
- 60 single best answer questions, including applied scenarios; one mark per question.
- 90 minute invigilated digital examination with identity verification. Approved accessibility adjustments preserve the assessed competence.
- Supplied reference pack and calculator permitted; external internet and AI prohibited.
- Individual applied assessment (60 minutes): Participate in a simulated node study and complete an individual HAZOP worksheet covering design intent, deviations, causes, consequences, safeguards and recommendations.
- Assessment criteria: Logical deviation cause and consequence analysis; Critical evaluation of safeguard assumptions; Clear traceable records and recommendations.
- Pass each component separately: 45/60 written marks (75%) and at least 70% on the applied task.
- All mandatory criteria must pass: Do not credit unsupported safeguards.
- Individual results and feedback are provided. One reassessment may follow coaching under the published enrolment terms.
Certification
- Successful learners receive a TQCSI Arabia digital Certificate of Successful Completion.
- The certificate records the learner name, exact programme title, teaching hours, completion date and unique verification reference.
- Verified identity, full attendance and separate written and applied passes are required; all mandatory critical criteria must be met.
- Proposed issue target: within 30 calendar days of approved results and settlement of applicable fees.
- Records HAZOP team participation skills; it does not qualify a study facilitator or approve process design and risk acceptance.
- Attendance confirmation may record completed hours for unsuccessful learners; it does not certify successful completion.
