Programme Summary
Develop a practical framework for recognising, evaluating and controlling workplace exposures that may cause illness. Participants characterise tasks and worker groups, plan proportionate exposure assessment and interpret supplied monitoring information. The programme connects sampling choices with control verification and specialist judgement, helping safety teams commission better assessments and avoid unsupported conclusions from limited or unrepresentative measurements.
Training Objectives
1 Recognise occupational exposure sources and pathways; 2 Characterise work groups and exposure variability; 3 Plan proportionate monitoring and evaluation activities; 4 Connect exposure evidence with effective prevention; 5 Identify limits requiring specialist occupational hygiene support.
Learning Outcomes
1 Prepare a basic exposure characterisation record; 2 Define similar exposure groups for assessment; 3 Draft a monitoring objective and sampling brief; 4 Interpret supplied exposure data with limitations; 5 Recommend control and specialist follow up priorities.
Target Audience
HSE Officers; Occupational Hygiene Assistants; Safety Managers; Process Safety Coordinators; Industrial Health Coordinators.
Target Industries
Chemical Manufacturing; Mining and Minerals; Metal Processing; Construction; Oil and Gas Operations; Pharmaceutical Manufacturing.
Course Contents
- Module 1 Occupational Hygiene Framework: Anticipation recognition evaluation and control; Exposure pathways and health effect principles; Professional boundaries and specialist collaboration.
- Module 2 Workplace Characterisation: Processes agents tasks and work conditions; Worker groups duration and exposure frequency; Nonroutine activities and vulnerable workers.
- Module 3 Hazard Information: Substance properties and generated contaminants; Toxicological information and uncertainty; Applicable limits and authoritative guidance.
- Module 4 Exposure Grouping: Similar tasks sources and control conditions; Between and within worker variability; Documenting grouping assumptions and changes.
- Module 5 Assessment Strategy: Clear monitoring objectives and decision questions; Qualitative screening and quantitative assessment choices; Priorities based on risk and uncertainty.
- Module 6 Airborne Sampling Principles: Personal versus area monitoring purposes; Sampling media flow and duration concepts; Method suitability and competent laboratory interfaces.
- Module 7 Measurement Quality: Calibration blanks and sample handling; Detection limits uncertainty and record completeness; Recognising invalid or unrepresentative measurements.
- Module 8 Interpreting Exposure Information: Time weighted and short duration measures; Variability limited samples and statistical uncertainty; Avoiding universal conclusions from single results.
- Module 9 Other Exposure Hazards: Noise vibration heat and biological exposures; Dermal routes and mixed hazard interfaces; Specialist measurement and assessment boundaries.
- Module 10 Control Evaluation: Elimination substitution enclosure and ventilation; Work practices protective equipment and maintenance; Evidence of control effectiveness over time.
- Module 11 Health Surveillance and Communication: Distinguishing monitoring from medical assessment; Confidentiality referral and worker information; Clear reports and practical control recommendations.
- Module 12 Exposure Assessment Workshop: Preparing a sampling and assessment brief; Interpreting a supplied monitoring dataset; Presenting controls limitations and specialist needs.
Assessment
- 60 single best answer questions, including applied scenarios; one mark per question.
- 90 minute invigilated digital examination with identity verification. Approved accessibility adjustments preserve the assessed competence.
- Supplied reference pack and calculator permitted; external internet and AI prohibited.
- Individual applied assessment (45 minutes): Prepare an exposure assessment brief for a fictional process, interpret supplied monitoring results and recommend controls with explicit uncertainty and specialist referral needs.
- Assessment criteria: Sound exposure characterisation and sampling purpose; Responsible interpretation of limited data; Practical prevention and specialist escalation.
- Pass each component separately: 45/60 written marks (75%) and at least 70% on the applied task.
- Individual results and feedback are provided. One reassessment may follow coaching under the published enrolment terms.
Certification
- Successful learners receive a TQCSI Arabia digital Certificate of Successful Completion.
- The certificate records the learner name, exact programme title, teaching hours, completion date and unique verification reference.
- Verified identity, full attendance and separate written and applied passes are required; all mandatory critical criteria must be met.
- Proposed issue target: within 30 calendar days of approved results and settlement of applicable fees.
- Records introductory occupational hygiene assessment skills; it does not confer specialist certification, medical authority or method specific monitoring competence.
- Attendance confirmation may record completed hours for unsuccessful learners; it does not certify successful completion.
