Programme Summary
Recognise and control the chemical and biological hazards encountered in laboratory work. Participants review task risks, containment choices, storage compatibility and safe waste handling using realistic laboratory scenarios. The programme strengthens decisions about escalation, incident response and working limits; practical activities use benign materials and simulations to support safe behaviour without authorising specialised hazardous laboratory operations.
Training Objectives
1 Recognise task specific laboratory hazard pathways; 2 Select proportionate prevention and containment controls; 3 Improve chemical storage and handling decisions; 4 Clarify incident reporting and emergency boundaries; 5 Strengthen safe laboratory work planning.
Learning Outcomes
1 Prepare a laboratory task risk assessment; 2 Identify unsuitable chemical storage arrangements; 3 Select suitable containment and protective measures; 4 Demonstrate simulated spill escalation decisions; 5 Draft a safe laboratory work checklist.
Target Audience
Laboratory Technicians; Laboratory Supervisors; Laboratory Safety Officers; Research Assistants; Laboratory Managers.
Target Industries
Chemical Testing Laboratories; Food Microbiology Laboratories; Environmental Laboratories; Research Laboratories; Pharmaceutical Laboratories.
Course Contents
- Module 1 Laboratory Risk Recognition: Chemical biological and physical hazard pathways; Task scale exposure and vulnerable personnel; Risk assessment and work authorisation boundaries.
- Module 2 Chemical Information and Handling: Safety data sheets and hazard labels; Exposure prevention and suitable work methods; Transfers dilution and incompatible material awareness.
- Module 3 Storage and Segregation: Compatibility groups and controlled inventories; Containers cabinets and secondary containment; Gas cylinders and temperature sensitive materials.
- Module 4 Biological Risk Controls: Agent procedure and exposure route assessment; Primary containment and workflow separation; Decontamination validation and access control.
- Module 5 Engineering and Protective Measures: Ventilation containment and equipment suitability; Protective clothing gloves and eye protection; Limitations of protective equipment and controls.
- Module 6 Laboratory Waste Controls: Segregation labelling and compatible containers; Sharps chemical and biological waste handling; Approved disposal routes and records.
- Module 7 Incidents and Emergency Decisions: Spill recognition isolation and escalation; Exposure response and emergency communication; Limits of untrained intervention and rescue.
- Module 8 Safe Laboratory Work Simulation: Assessing a fictional laboratory task; Selecting controls and emergency actions; Presenting a safe work and escalation plan.
Assessment
- 40 single best answer questions, including applied scenarios; one mark per question.
- 60 minute invigilated digital examination with identity verification. Approved accessibility adjustments preserve the assessed competence.
- Supplied reference pack and calculator permitted; external internet and AI prohibited.
- Individual applied assessment (60 minutes): Assess a fictional laboratory task, identify storage hazards and demonstrate safe isolation and escalation decisions in a benign spill scenario.
- Assessment criteria: Accurate hazard and exposure recognition; Suitable control and containment selection; Safe escalation within competence limits.
- Pass each component separately: 30/40 written marks (75%) and at least 70% on the applied task.
- All mandatory criteria must pass: Avoid unprotected exposure or rescue; Escalate beyond competence limits.
- Individual results and feedback are provided. One reassessment may follow coaching under the published enrolment terms.
Certification
- Successful learners receive a TQCSI Arabia digital Certificate of Successful Completion.
- The certificate records the learner name, exact programme title, teaching hours, completion date and unique verification reference.
- Verified identity, full attendance and separate written and applied passes are required; all mandatory critical criteria must be met.
- Proposed issue target: within 30 calendar days of approved results and settlement of applicable fees.
- Records laboratory safety learning; it does not authorise high containment work, hazardous agent handling or emergency rescue duties.
- Attendance confirmation may record completed hours for unsuccessful learners; it does not certify successful completion.
